Tears of Crystal

copyright 1995 by Deb Atwood

Phoebe's story is from an Amber campaign run by Mark Toigo from January 1994 through May of that same year. The campaign had a rather spectacular ending, which someday, perhaps, shall be immortalized in Phoebe's journal.

Her journals are presented here in unedited form, exactly as they were composed for the campaign. I have presented them in the same order in which I wrote them for her, which is not always a true chronological order. Above all else, Phoebe was a storyteller, and each story is presented as if it were told by the flickering firelight in a dusky inn, earning her coin for her supper.

Phoebe's description appears below, if you care to see her as the others of her world saw her. As always with any of my writing, feedback is appreciated.

A woman, perhaps five feet tall, with delicate features and tiny bones. A swirl of shoulder length hair of seemingly spun silver falls in a cloud around her shoulders, framing a delicate face with serious ice-blue eyes rimmed with thick lashes. She seems to be in her early teens, having seen perhaps 15 years. She wears a red tunic, caught at the wrists in silver bindings trimmed with red. A black leather belt catches the tunic at her waist, bound with a silver clasp in the form of a flying bird. Across her back is a black and silver sheath for a sword, the hilt trimmed with a large red stone capping the end. Around her neck, on a black leather band, is a clear crystal the size of her thumb. When she speaks, it is with a soft British accent, ingrained from years of use, almost hidden, but not quite.
