Dara

from A Grand Affair

character run by Deb Atwood

Dara & Music

Random holds up one finger, his face now expressionless.

"There is one more thing. As a rule I require newly arrived family members to take up a musical instrument."

Dara relaxes abruptly, melting into amusement and delight.

"I would enjoy that. Do you have a recommendation, Sire, for either instrument or tutor? And is there a deadline by which time I must become proficient?"

Amusement dances in her eyes as she grins at him. It is impossible to tell whether she takes him seriously or is teasing -- but the pure delight at the idea is most evidently honest.

Trained from birth for a single mission, Dara never had time for other interests. Free for the first time in her life, she is delighting in new experiences. Music has always been a pleasure, but she had never thought of it with respect to herself until Random's statement.

For Dara, a musical instrument must reflect her personality. It must be mutable, changeable, showing a variety of moods and able to shift and change on a moment's notice. She may, someday, choose other instruments. At the time when A Grand Affair begins, she has not yet selected.

However, after great out of character thought, an instrument has been selected. She will discover this on her own eventually.

The piano.

Not keyboards. Nothing electronic. Purely piano. Earthy and raw and delicate and sweet and joyful and loud and soft and subtle and thudding and... changed notes drawn from skillful hands, always changing to reflect the moods and desires of the artist. There is nothing false about the piano... nothing synthesized.

It also well symbolizes how Dara herself changes to reflect the moods around her.

And just imagine a shapeshifter playing piano... the mind boggles. *grins*
